Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
This subject, too, is treated concisely by artist Mino Maccari, highlighting features that are not only physiognomic but also character-specific, in a sort of caricatured expressionism. The distinctive feature of this graphic work is that the faces are rendered in negative, and the black background determines the composition's shapes and rhythm. This remains the same throughout, fragmented and agitated, in its angles and cuts, typical of Mino Maccari.
Mino Maccari was born in Siena in 1898 and died in Rome in 1989. A prominent figure in Italian culture, he was a writer, painter, and journalist. His artistic career flourished especially after World War II. In 1962, he was appointed president of the Accademia di San Luca, and a solo exhibition of his work was held in New York. Mino Maccari produced a vast body of drawings, prints, and watercolors, always characterized by an expressionistic flair for violent drawing and a vibrant pictorial interpretation.
