Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this drawing, which has a predominantly sketchy character, Mino Beppi shows us that, in addition to being a master of color, he is also a highly skilled graphic artist. This is evident in this work, where the artist constructs the figures by subjecting them to a process of synthesis through a nervous line. The line highlights the heavy volumes of the figures, squaring them off, giving them an almost geometrical impact. The volumes are filled in with a soft hatching that also creates a play of shadows. With great skill, the same soft hatching then delineates the floor tiling, allowing us to perceive depth.
Mino Beppi was a painter originally from Gardone Val Trompia, where he was born in 1913. From an early age, he showed a propensity for drawing. He trained in Brescia under the guidance of the Mozzoni brothers, and in 1958 he exhibited his work in his first solo show with Giuseppe Mozzoni. In the following years, he held several solo exhibitions in his hometown, as well as in other Italian towns (Bolzano 1963, Gardone Riviera and Lumezzane 1965, Boario 1967, Vallio 1968/72, Iseo and Sale Marasino 1970, Brescia 1976, Florence 1996). He passed away in 2007 in Solliera, near Modena.
