Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject depicts a famous work by the Bolognese painter Guido Reni, "Saint Matthew and the Angel," preserved in the Vatican Pinacoteca. The painting was created by the Bolognese master between 1621 and 1622. The iconography is very popular in cycles dedicated to Saint Matthew. The scene shows the former tax collector, later become an apostle, intent on writing his gospel under the dictation of the angel.
In this work, we can appreciate Guido Reni's high classicist style. It is undoubtedly a product of the great 17th-century naturalism that, aiming to correct the supposed errors of Mannerism, drew directly from the great masters of the late Renaissance, Raphael in particular. Hence the monumentality of the figure of Saint Matthew, with its rounded forms that undoubtedly also have something to do with Titian. A total naturalistic rendering, therefore, that is also expressed in a restrained atmosphere. Saint Matthew and the angel, in fact, interact with the space in a balanced way, with a light sfumato that renders their contours undefined, their flesh soft to the touch, and their hair light in the air. Painter Minnie Fabbricotti's interpretation, therefore, is absolutely respectful of the stylistic characteristics of 17th-century classicism, both in terms of the quality of the brushstrokes and the warm, natural chromaticism.
The master copy was created by Minnie Fabricotti, a Roman painter gifted with exceptional technique, capable of reviving the great classics of the past through her soft and delicate brushstrokes. The reproduction is based on a work by Guido Reni. Reni, who lived between 1575 and 1642, was one of the most important painters of 17th-century Classicism. Born in Bologna, he trained at the Accademia degli Incamminati under the Carracci brothers. His career developed primarily in Rome, where he achieved extraordinary fame.
