Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Mchopa is a painter of reality; in his paintings, he seeks to convey the daily life of his native Africa, both through the accurate depiction of traditional tribal clothing and jewelry, and through scenes taken from the most candid of daily life. The formality of Mchopa's artistic practice is based on a marked exaltation of plasticity. The figures are delineated in their volumes, although we note, in his realism, a certain desire to cast a veil of mystery. The faces and facial features are almost hidden by deep shadows, determined by a skillful use of light. Another characteristic that distinguishes Mchopa's portraits is the emphasis on the bright, vivid red of the cloaks that cover his figures, which, combined with the darkness of the shadows, creates a suggestive contrast.
As we can see from an analysis of his work, the artist Mchopa stands out for his essentially realist painting style, aimed at depicting a tribal and everyday reality. His works are nourished by the evocative power of chromatic contrasts between light and shadow, red and black.
