Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Mariolino da Caravaggio's eclectic personality led this painter, known primarily for his master copies and hyperrealist pastiches, to also create refined landscape paintings. And we can appreciate how, in this context, Mariolino tends to distance himself from rigorous realism and adopt post-Impressionist solutions that imbue his painted landscapes with a subtle lyricism. Indeed, within the representation, the drawn structure gives way to the application of color, achieved through rapid hatching. The execution is rapid and summary, adhering to the canons of plein air painting, capable of conveying the immediacy of the landscape with precise lighting conditions, while also imbuing it with precise emotional overtones. Mariolino da Caravaggio's ability to adapt to the Impressionist technique is evident in the tonal consistency throughout the work. Note, in particular, the rapid touches of white with which the painter distributes the reflections of light on the surface of the water and the walls of the buildings.
Mariolino Feraboli was an artist originally from Caravaggio in the province of Bergamo, born in 1923 and died in 1992. Better known as Mariolino da Caravaggio or the Forger, he was a painter specialized in the reproduction of author copies and still lifes; his works appear in numerous private collections.
