Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
This work documents a more synthetic and abstract phase in Mario Sironi's work compared to the "return to order" period. The scene is depicted with a remarkable expressionist synthesis that reduces forms to the essential and creates a dramatic composition, made of dense layers of color. In this sense, the conception of a complex, non-univocal space, constructed by the artist's gestures, is crucial. Indeed, from a formal perspective, we note a dense and material pictorial layering, with broad strokes and an almost gestural approach.
The work has been attributed to Mario Sironi. A native of Sassari, where he was born in 1885 and died in Milan in 1961, his artistic career is primarily linked to the Novecento group, which, coinciding with the general climate of a return to order in European painting after the historical avant-garde, advocated a return to the Italian pictorial tradition and an exaltation of plastic values. Sironi's works are distinguished by the rationality of their compositional structure, especially in his famous urban landscapes, imbued with magical realism. Throughout his career, however, Sironi also traversed several more expressionist and synthetic phases.
