Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this diptych, painter Mario D'Elia offers us two delightful Florentine views, demonstrating his skillful execution. Compositionally, the work depicts two parallel perspectives, culminating in a view of a monument. This rather rational and orderly scheme is, however, tempered by the artist with a gentle painterly style. The execution, in fact, is achieved through a brushstroke that imbues the objects with luminous and existential vibrations.
Mario D'Elia was born in Florence in 1922, but spent his childhood in Gallipoli, where he began painting under the tutelage of his father, a painter of the Neapolitan school. He found his definitive stylistic signature in Surrealism. He participated in numerous exhibitions and created several public works, such as The Baptism of St. John the Baptist in the Church of Santa Maria de' Ricci on Via del Corso and The Meeting of Dante and Beatrice in the Church of Dante on Via del Corso.
