Description of the work
Description of the work
In the Middle Ages, literature related to the mystery of the Grail saw Parzival among its main characters.
The story goes that his mother kept Parzifal in the dark about being the son of a knight, wishing to protect him from the trials and tribulations that his origins, and therefore his true nature, would require.
So she raises him in the forest, far from the world.
From a symbolic point of view, the maternal figure represents nature that holds immature consciousness prisoner in the illusion of apparent realities.
The painting refers to the first part of the tale, when Parzifal does not yet possess the sword, a weapon reserved for the brave, but uses a bow and arrow for hunting, an activity linked to the satisfaction of primary physical needs. A bare tree emphasizes the fruitlessness of a life spent in the frenzy of external things, the sterility of an existence relegated to mere survival. The bow, however, prefigures the goal and also symbolizes the tension of unconscious desires, which the arrow can direct upward, towards sublimation.
Perched on the branch is a bird, recalling the aerial and metaphysical nature of the path towards the conquest of awareness, also suggested by the colors of the painting – black, white, red, gold – which correspond to those of the phases of the alchemical work.
