Description of the work
Description of the work
In the myth of Oedipus the Sphinx is the monster placed on guard before the gate of Thebes.
It kills all those who desire access to the sacred city but cannot explain the famous riddle:
“Who, having only one voice, transforms himself into a quadruped, a biped, and a tripod?”
The hero is depicted standing, naked, with the scroll of wisdom in his hand as he answers: “man,” thus resolving the tricky question.
Oedipus, no longer covered by lying mental habits, stripped and free of everything, intuits the solution and can therefore cross the hitherto forbidden threshold to penetrate the mystery of the sacred, previously hidden by the "astral light" which, reified in the form of the sphinx, prevented access.
Above the heads of the two, a large drape indicates that the event, Oedipus' victory over the Sphinx, is understood in a more intimate, profound sense, as the victory of conscience which, once awakened, finds itself capable of defeating the traps of the mind.
