Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" comes from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. In both painting and sculpture, the process of abstracting objects can be taken to the extreme, resulting in pure forms.
In this sculpture, with its refined symbolic meaning, we can sense how artist Luigi Mazzella's research focuses on movement and form. The sculpture's large, curved volumes are the result of the object's various rotations in the space it interacts with. It is movement, therefore, that generates pure, full forms, synonymous with the flourish of motherhood that Mazzella seeks to represent.
Luigi Mazzella is a sculptor born in Naples in 1936. In his artistic work, he uses a wide variety of materials, from bronze to wood, from clay to lead and copper. After a primarily figurative beginning, his artistic language has developed through an exploration of forms and volumes, rotations and intersections of planes. He produces large-scale public works as well as jewelry.
