Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of the Passion of Christ has been developed since the Middle Ages, especially in 13th- and 14th-century painting through the subject of the Arma Christi. Often, panels depicting the Dead Christ (or imago pietatis) were accompanied by various objects recalling episodes of the Passion. With the evolution of the Catholic liturgy, the iconographic theme of the Passion evolved into the 14 Stations of the Cross.
In these works, Ludovici Bronislav employs a marked reduction of subject matter in an expressionistic manner. Formal means have been pared down by the artist to the bare essentials to accentuate the spiritual nature of the episodes. Any type of individual, physiognomic, or contextual connotation is eliminated in order to create a type of depiction with an otherworldly character and a strong religious connotation.
Ludovici Bronislav is a sculptor who shows, in his work, a clear expressionist tendency.
