Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Cargnel's works are created with a remarkable technique inspired by Impressionism. The artist aims for a naturalistic rendering but uses rapid brushstrokes, using hatching, to quickly delineate shapes and volumes. This allows him to capture the effects of light and atmosphere on objects and to instantly convey a landscape with precise meteorological and environmental conditions to the canvas. The entire color palette is based on a specific tone, consistent across the entire surface. The perspective grid is not eliminated, but spatial depth is determined exclusively through color shading.
Lucio Cargnel was a painter from Treviso, born in 1903 and died in Milan in 1998. His favorite subjects are landscapes, city views, streets, and squares. Born into the artistic family of Vittorio Antonio Cargnel, he inherited his father's exploration of light and the scenographic compositional structure of his work. Compared to his father's, Lucio Cargnel's color palette is brighter.
