Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality.
The synthesis achieved by Sopelsa in this landscape has less to do with historical Expressionism than with a mechanomorphic reconstruction of reality, grounded in geometric rationality. The marked reduction in spatial depth, however, allows the composition to resolve itself as an interlocking and overlapping of planes, which are highlighted by a broad, highly textured paintbrush.
Luciano Sopelsa is a Venetian artist born in 1921. He trained under Bruno Saetti, serving as his assistant for two years. From his master, he undoubtedly learned a taste for geometric compositions and the expressionist synthesis of phenomenal reality, although he often remained more attached to a figurative style. He frescoed several churches in the Veneto region.
