Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
This acrylic painting reveals Denis Riva's distinctive style, a balanced blend of figuration and abstraction, gestural practices, and compositional balance. At the center of the work is the figure of the sower, who appears to still have a connection to phenomenal reality, despite his synthetic treatment through textured brushstrokes. The figure serves as a linchpin for the rest of the composition, where a decorative impulse prevails, gestural in some areas and more serial in others. The chromatic range is exuberant yet balanced within the composition's economy.
Denis Riva is an artist originally from Cento, but lives and works in Palata Pepoli. In addition to being a painter and illustrator, he also works in video and installations. He has exhibited his work throughout Italy since 1997. Denis Riva is also active in the Italian music scene: he is the saxophonist in the band Trabant Mobil.
