Lamberto Ciavatta - Christ

A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and gradually more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes. It is often accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross (which signifies the redemptive action of Christ's Passion in the face of original sin).

Lamberto Ciavatta's painting style always draws on an expressionist language, which he interprets in his own unique way. His mastery lies in his ability to create highly expressive faces through color, which he applies with broad, dense brushstrokes. With just a few strokes, the artist manages to depict deformed masks, a recurring theme in his oeuvre. In this work, this subject serves as a backdrop to the iconography of the crucifixion, which is also highly expressionistic. The figure of Christ is elongated in an unnatural way, almost stretched, to emphasize the emotional tension of his suffering. The colors in Ciavatta's paintings are always strong, vibrant, and the application is textured.

Lamberto Ciavatta was born in Nettuno in 1908 and passed away in 1981. He was the director of the International Academy of the Nude in Rome. Throughout his career, he exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions not only in Italy, but also throughout Europe and the Middle East. His works are held in collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Municipal Gallery in Dublin, the Royal Museums of Brussels, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Zurich Museum, the Moscow Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, and the Museo Ciudad Bolivar.
