Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
A constant in Karina Chavin's language is the construction of the figure through rounded forms, with accentuated symmetry, as if generated by a rotation around a pivot. The facial features are generic but marked by a type of synthesis dictated by a conscious childishness and the imaginative nature of an illustrator. A naive objectivism that somehow recalls the style of painters like Antonio Bueno, even if the character is quite different. For Bueno, objective forms have a strong rational imprint, while in Chavin, on the other hand, we detect a more playful and fairy-tale-like character. This is also thanks to the notable chromatic connotation, brilliant and kaleidoscopic.
Karina Chavin is an Argentine painter, born in Buenos Aires in 1969. She trained at the Prilidiano Pueyrredon National School of Fine Arts and the Ernesto de la Carcova Higher School of Fine Arts. In 1995, she opened her own studio in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, especially in her home country. She is also a prolific illustrator.
