Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The print reflects Rococo culture primarily in its subject matter rather than its style, which can be described as full naturalism. However, the abundance of detail that covers the entire surface of the work and the vaporous forms are typical of the Rococo style. The scene has been inserted within a coherent spatial box in perfect perspective. The artist's skill in reproducing every minute detail (in the faces, clothing, and furnishings) is particularly noteworthy. The final result is a composition of refined miniaturist precision.
John Raphael Smith was a British painter and engraver born in Derby in 1752 and died in Doncaster in 1812. His career began with a draper's shop, where he produced miniatures. He later devoted himself primarily to engraving. His popularity began with the Public Ledger. His reproductions at Reynolds's are considered masterpieces of mezzotint. Smith was the teacher of William Turner and Charles Howard Hodges.
