Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The painting is a typical example of the work of Belgian painter Jaak Van Den Seylbergh. He is a painter who adheres to a distinctly academic style, within a conception in which naturalistic rendering becomes so important as to verge on hyperrealism. This is largely due to the Flemish context, where an interest in photographic reproductions of objects, flowers, and fruit is deeply rooted. Precision lies in reproducing the texture of flowers and the first signs of decay, the surfaces of vases, and the effects of light on them. To achieve this, the artist uses a highly dynamic technique in which, while maintaining formal precision, he does not shy away from more painterly effects achieved through rapid application.
Jaak Van Den Seylbergh was a Belgian painter who lived between 1884 and 1960. His work focused on still lifes, particularly flower arrangements, which he executed with a remarkable pastel technique. His artistic language is academic and follows the Flemish tradition of realistic and detailed representations of reality.
