Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
Irma Kukhianidze's artistic language certainly falls within the sphere of an Expressionist aesthetic, in the sense that the subject undergoes a reduction, a synthesis that reduces it to the essential and to pure spirituality. This synthesis, however, does not consist, as in Expressionism, of a linear, two-dimensional composition. In Irma Kukhianidze, the subject acquires a characterization that draws us more toward the fabulous and the fantastic. What we see before us seems like a character from a fairytale illustration. Then the painter adds her own, formally, with an elaborate, extremely material application, which leaves a patina of antiquity and antiquity that makes the representation even more captivating.
Irma Kukhianidze is a Georgian painter, born in Tbilisi in 1970. Her artistic language is strongly linked to the world of illustration, leading her to create works brimming with imagination and creativity. Formally, she stands out for her extremely elaborate pictorial layers.
