Description of the work
Description of the work
Son of the goldsmith Pietro, he was born in Imola probably around 1490. After studying in his father's workshop for the first few years, he moved to nearby Bologna in 1506 to study painting. According to Carlo Cesare Malvasia, he joined Francesco Francia's workshop starting in 1508 (this source, however, has been questioned). Later, according to Vasari, he moved to Florence, where, in 1510, he worked under the direction of Mariotto Albertinelli. His very early works include the altarpiece of The Virgin and Child with Saints Sebastian, Roch, Cosmas and Damian signed and dated 1515 and The Madonna and Child with Saints John, Apollinaris and Catherine and a Bishop signed and dated 1516; both were created in his hometown, the first is preserved in the archpriest's church of Bagnara, the second in the Church of Sant'Apollinare in Casola Valsenio, near Imola. Throughout his life he produced numerous religious frescoes and altarpieces, painting in the manner of Raphael. His only secular paintings are five mythological frescoes in the Palazzina della Viola in Bologna. He trained people such as Francesco Primaticcio, Prospero Fontana, and Pietro Lamo. The interior of the Church of Santa Maria Dei Servi in Bologna was painted by Francucci. Innocenzo Francucci died in Bologna in 1550.
