Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this beautiful engraving is inspired by Roman history and, in particular, the mythical origins of the Eternal City. The scene depicts the moment when Romulus, Rome's first king, traced the furrow that marked the city's borders.
The work's style is emblematic of a neoclassical spirit that shapes not only the subject but also its formal form. Indeed, the conception of the scene entirely draws on an ancient approach, inspired by Greek and Roman statuary. The bodies are constructed according to harmonious proportions and exhibit a clear plasticity that highlights anatomical beauty. The entire scene is conceived in a largely abstract manner, with a horizontal development and shallow depth, like an ancient sculptural frieze.
The work is a copperplate engraving belonging to the series of the Istoria Romana… (plate 3) - Rome 1818.
