Description of the work
Themes related to astronomy or science fiction in art can, in many cases, be traced back to the typical aesthetics of Surrealist art, where the existence of other worlds or parallel dimensions can be connected to our subconscious. However, when science fiction becomes a celebration of technology, it's impossible not to identify its origins in Futurism, which made the celebration of progress one of its main themes. Coinciding with the development of the science fiction genre in cinema, around the 1960s, some painters also began to explore this theme in art, such as the celebrated Chesley Bonestell.
Painter Ilia Peikov approaches this science-fiction-themed painting with his distinctive style. First and foremost, the composition focuses on fluid, horizontal pictorial movements, interrupted only by the circular shape of the planet. Peikov's language is a sort of informal one, based on a magmatic application of color with a fluid, veiled pictorial quality, suggesting a sense of levitation and suspension in the scene. Everything is designed to convey a floating, gravity-deprived situation.
Ilia Peikov was a Hungarian-born artist born in Sofia in 1911. He moved to Rome in 1943, became a naturalized Italian, and died in the capital in 1988. In Rome, he initially worked as an assistant to his brother, the sculptor Assen Peikov, then, after World War II, he embarked on a career as a painter. His studio was on Via Margutta, which in the 1970s was a lively center of artistic activity. In 1980, Peikov received the Gold Medal of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Bulgaria's highest honor. His research focuses on the representation of the Universe.
