Description of the work
Description of the work
Lia Crippa (1922-2003) was an Italian painter, sister of the celebrated artist Roberto Crippa. Born in Monza, she lived and worked primarily in Milan, where she frequented important artists of the time, including Lucio Fontana. Her artistic career flourished between the 1960s and 1980s, with numerous solo and group exhibitions. A sensitive and charismatic artist, Lia Crippa was a veritable volcano of ideas. Her approach to painting was distinctive: she loved to paint in dim light, with the canvas laid horizontally rather than mounted on an easel. She used various supports, such as canvas and canvas boards, and experimented with mixed media and oil paint. Color was a central element in her work, luminous and vibrant, capable of conveying profound emotions. Her style oscillated between abstraction and the representation of natural elements, with subjects ranging from floral compositions and stylized animals to fantastical bodies. Her artistic production was primarily divided into two main strands: flowers, figuratively represented with bright, vibrant colors, and totems, symbolic and structured expressions of her artistic research. When she painted, she completely withdrew from the world around her, immersed in the creative process. Although she was surrounded by a vibrant artistic community and had many friends, Lia Crippa sometimes experienced a certain solitude, perhaps necessary for her inner journey and her search for expression. In addition to her home in Milan, she had a residence in Santa Margherita Ligure, where she loved to retreat to find inspiration and tranquility. Her artistic production spanned a particularly intense period between 1961 and 1985, years during which she participated in numerous solo exhibitions. Among these are the 1973 exhibition at the Galleria d'Arte Cortina in Milan and the 1986 exhibition "La Comédie Humaine" at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, accompanied by a catalogue introduced by critic Franco Passoni. In 1970, the Galleria d'Arte Cavour published a catalog with essays by Michel Tapié, Franco Passoni, and André Verdet, demonstrating the great critical interest in her work. Throughout her life, Lia Crippa received several awards, including the Ambrogino d'Oro. Her art is characterized by profound sensitivity and a research into color and form.
