Description of the work
Description of the work
Also known as the Tacuinu m Sanitatis , this evocative manuscript from the Casanatense Library in Rome is a natural science encyclopedia containing descriptions of plants, minerals, and animals, with particular reference to their medical and therapeutic properties. The codex dates back to the late 14th century and was executed at the court of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, who later donated it to Wenceslaus IV, King of Bohemia and Germany. The manuscript's 295 pages, arranged in alphabetical sections, contain over five hundred plant illustrations , providing a detailed and impressive picture of the vast knowledge of the plant world achieved in Italy by the end of the Middle Ages. Added to these botanical images are over eighty illustrations of animals from which healing substances were obtained, and more than thirty illustrations of mineral derivatives. Furthermore, there are numerous entries depicting scenes and characters illustrating episodes of daily life , while the initials often include the half-length effigy of a doctor or a wise man.
