Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
As can be seen from this painting, Guido Borgianni's style is entirely based on color. The artist begins with a post-Impressionist, almost Divisionist, technique and takes it to its extreme. Thus, on a two-dimensional surface, the image is constructed through large, textured touches of color. In this way, the subject undergoes a remarkable synthetic process, which must certainly be interpreted in an Expressionist vein.
Guido Borgianni was born in New York in 1915 but lived in Florence throughout his life, where he passed away in 2011. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under Felice Carena. His artistic language soon shifted toward a Divisionist style inspired by the Expressionism of artists such as Oskar Kokoschka. In 1946, he exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale. In 1950, he won a prize at the Mostra Nazionale del Fiorino in Florence, and in 1956, he was appointed a member of the Academy of Drawing Arts in Florence.
