Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of an Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color applied with bold, energetic strokes. The colors themselves are not entirely true to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition, constructed of overlapping bands, is so synthetic that it points towards Abstract Expressionism.
Graziella da Gioz was born in Belluno in 1957. She trained at the Academy of Fine Arts with Emilio Vedova. She has developed a distinctive form of landscape painting, tending toward abstraction. Her major exhibitions include: 1992 solo exhibition at Palazzo Sarcinelli, Conegliano; 1993–1997 traveling group exhibitions "Twenty Painters in Italy," "Paintings. Feeling and Form," and 1999 "In Praise of Pastel" at Palazzo Sarcinelli, Conegliano; 2003 solo exhibition at the Living Gallery, Rome; 2009–2010 "Italian Painting. True Landscapes and the Soul," at Castel Sismondo, Rimini; 2010–2013 solo exhibitions at the Galata Museo del Mare, Genoa, the Galleria laRinascente, Padua, and Villa Ancilotto in Crocetta del Montello.
