Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
In this work, too, painter Giusy D'Arrigo achieves a refined blend of figurative and abstract, with a certain predominance, however, of the naturalistic element. The image of motherhood is very well delineated, with a confident drawing that gives monumentality and character to the group. But the strong emotional and, above all, spiritual component of Giusy D'Arrigo's artistic practice, in this case, bursts through. Thus, everything is transfigured in the pictorial layering, thanks to a complex brushstroke, at times gestural, at times made of transparent glazes in which the color, with its expressive vigor, undoubtedly takes center stage.
Giusy D'Arrigo is an artist originally from Paris, where she was born in 1970. She later moved to Sicily for a time, but currently lives and works in Rome. Her training began in France, and she has been featured in numerous exhibitions and shows in Parisian ateliers and boulevards. The traveling exhibition Metamorfosi, dedicated to her late brother Angelo, a multiple free-flying champion, was a great success, and toured cities such as Buenos Aires, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Rome. Her solo exhibition in New York's Soho, titled Spiral Life, was a significant success. Her works are included in numerous private collections.
