Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Giovanni Di Munno's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate, impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes his subjects in every detail, with a strong sense of reality and the everyday, simple experience. On the other, his refined painting technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to his works, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reflects on objects, but without interfering with the precise depiction of reality. Giovanni Di Munno's painting is therefore characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft, delicate colors also serves this purpose.
Giovanni Di Munno, Monopoli 1919-1993. His predominant interest in landscape, stemming from the 20th-century Apulian painting tradition he had assimilated from his teachers in Monopoli, quickly established him as one of the most prominent figures on the Venezuelan art scene in the 1970s. His encounter with and association with the members of the "Escuela de Caracas" was crucial, convincing him to continue his artistic research, completing the path he had begun in his native land.
