Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer.
The style in which artist Giovanni D'Aquino constructed this subject moves along the lines of expressionist-surrealist. Sensory data are synthesized into an image that moves within a dreamlike dimension. The linework is deliberately rough, employing a dense, thick color that builds the image.
Giovanni d'Aquino is a painter who moves along an expressionist line as regards form, but aesthetically he draws on a surrealist poetics.
