Giorgio De Chirico - The Disquieting Muses

This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio de Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. However, it creates an effect of alienation through the process of displacement, that is, the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context, or through condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images. The work reproduces one of Giorgio de Chirico's most famous subjects, the Disquieting Muses, the original version of which was created between 1917 and 1919.

The silkscreen is emblematic of Giorgio De Chirico's aesthetic choices and features one of the most recurring subjects in his work: mannequins. It's noticeable how the same subjects appear in a completely out-of-context setting, in a landscape with a castle in the background (the Estense Castle is a specific reference to Ferrara, the birthplace of Metaphysical Art). Furthermore, the mannequins are positioned on a sort of theatrical stage, a wooden floor whose slats follow an impossible perspective. The same applies to the lighting, typical of De Chirico, which casts shadows that completely defy reality. Even in his graphic work, De Chirico favors a very objective and dry style, which tends to highlight the figures and enhance their enigmatic and illusory nature.
