Description of the work
Description of the work
Waterscapes are an uncommon subject in the history of art. The earliest examples can be found in some Roman mosaics.
Starting from the sensory data of a view of the seabed, Gianni Dova reworks the phenomenal world. This reworking is carried out through a material and gestural pictorialism that almost verges on the informal with its swirling layers of color. The intense color seems to engulf the entire surface of the painting. Yet Dova remains connected to the phenomenal reality, which remains perfectly legible even in his interpretation.
Gianni Dova was born in Rome in 1946, but his artistic career developed in Milan, where he moved with his family and where he attended the Brera Academy in 1942. He initially joined the group of artists known as "Corrente"—Renato Guttuso, Emilio Vedova, Renato Birolli, Ennio Morlotti, Bruno Cassinari, and Giuseppe Migneco. Through them, he encountered Guernica, Picasso's painting that became a symbol of art against barbarism. In 1946, he joined the Manifesto of Realism, Beyond Guernica, and in 1951, the Spatialism movement.
