Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
For artist Gianfranco Motton, depicting landscapes or subjects from life means achieving, through painting, a delicate fusion between naturalistic rendering and poetry. Indeed, his works, in which he employs a purely figurative language, remain rooted in sensory data. Yet reality seems to be transfigured into a lyrical interpretation that almost transports it into a dreamlike dimension. Formally, all this translates into a very delicate pictorial style where the representation of reality occurs in a rarefied manner. This means that the recording of realistic details and particulars is lost in favor of a language that tends to be more expressionistic and symbolic. Gianfranco Motton's refined pictorial touch, which synthesizes objects with great delicacy, plays a key role in this process. Thus, the color palette is also distinguished by a very subtle anti-naturalistic tendency, whereby the immersion in predominant hues, spread across large chromatic fields, identifies the artist's poetic sensibility and his almost dreamlike interpretation of reality.
Gianfranco Motton was born in Adria (Rovigo) in 1934. His strong interest in painting led him to Milan, where he settled in 1956. He attended the Brera Academy, under the guidance of Cantatore and Salvadori. In 1956, he was invited to the Triveneta d'Arte in Padua and to the Bevilacqua La Masa, the Venice Biennale for young artists. Since then, he has held over 60 solo exhibitions. In 1958, he was invited to Ivrea, where he held a solo exhibition at the Olivetti Cultural Center, and where Comm. Adriano Olivetti commissioned several works from him. He has taught decoration and drawing at the Art High School in Busto Arsizio. He has worked as a set designer for RAI. He has participated in major national and international art exhibitions. He has received significant recognition: his works are included in public and private collections. He lives and works in Milan.
