Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the highest expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
A representative of the Novecento Italiano group, Gabriele Mucchi is a painter who makes plasticity a dominant component of his work. Thus, in this lithograph, we can see how the composition's main structure is based on a clean, unwavering line. This black outline determines the solid, compact volumes of the subjects, rendering them with a hard form. The drapery almost seems to break as it bends, and the woman's body seems to be made of a precious material. The drawing is enlivened by lively diagonal hatching.
Gabriele Mucchi was born in Turin in 1899 and died in Milan in 2002. Besides being a painter, he was also an architect. He moved to Milan in 1926, where he began exhibiting with the Novecento group. Among his most important exhibitions were the Venice International Art Exhibitions of 1930, 1933, and 1936, and the V and VI Milan Triennale. Having become an anti-fascist, he joined the Corrente movement and, during the war, participated in the partisan resistance. At the end of the conflict, his civic commitment translated into works with a realist influence.
