Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. An elegant composition structured on a diagonal cut that enhances its poetic and theatrical quality. The staging is well-conceived, with the character taken from a three-quarter angle and the woman and child opposite illuminated by a beam of light coming from the window on the left. All this implies a refined drawing technique, in the naturalistic rendering of the numerous details and in the balance of light and shadow. GA Periam was a 19th-century English author. He possessed a solid academic education and demonstrated great drawing skills in his engravings. His compositions show a strong affinity with Romantic culture. They are mostly genre scenes characterized by a refined poetic sentimentality.
