Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an aspect of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The 19th century also saw the beginning of an interest in the lives of peoples and cultures other than Western art. Exoticism developed especially during the Post-Impressionist period and was a fundamental component in the birth of the historical avant-garde.
In this painting, painter Francesco Martini returns to a familiar subject: camel caravans lost in the vastness of an African desert. The artist's style is highly recognizable for its rapid strokes, which stylize the subjects and depict them as small, slender figures. These figures, however, are enlivened by Martini's painterly quality, which, with a few impressionistic touches, characterizes his characters. The color palette is visionary and features some anti-naturalistic overtones. Color, in particular, goes beyond the representation of natural truth, taking on symbolic meanings.
Francesco Martini is an artist born in 1947 in Sesto San Giovanni whose style draws inspiration from expressionism, with energetic lines and a vibrant color palette. His subjects are inspired by reality, but he always translates them with a visionary flair that brings his work closer to surrealism.
