Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists (as in this case) to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion, but rather transfiguring it into a realistic vision featuring simple people.
Gennaro Solferino is a master of a pictorial style entirely devoted to the naturalistic rendering of the subject. What makes Solferino's style distinctive, and marks it as technically significant, is that the artist achieves this naturalism through a highly pictorial technique. The application of the brushwork is achieved through an almost impressionistic hatching, which, however, consolidates the form in the viewer's eye, ensuring unity and sculptural relief to the subject.
Ernesto Gennaro Solferino is a painter originally from Latiano di Brindisi, where he was born in 1946. He has exhibited his work at numerous events both in Italy and abroad. He has been a teacher of painting and a well-known designer.
