Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject reflects the characteristics of the Vedutismo movement. Vedutismo is a genre born in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo painters aimed to represent a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are essentially two types of vedute: the realistic one, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter. The subject of this work falls into the latter category, as it depicts a ruined portico immersed in a picturesque landscape.
The artist who painted this landscape shows a strong connection to the Vedutismo tradition. Indeed, the work seems to reflect this tradition right from the composition, with a dramatic framing encompassing a vast expanse of landscape. The space is perfectly framed and described in a concrete and measurable manner through a flawless perspective constructed on a convergence toward a vanishing point. But above all, the execution method is consistent with Vedutismo: the artist uses a quick, cursive stroke, roughly delineating the details and allowing their recomposition to occur in the viewer's eye. The artist manages to blur the forms into the atmosphere, constructing the objects with a thin line that outlines their contours and then softens them, allowing light to permeate the entire scene. The entire pictorial space is thus unified in a perfect twilight atmosphere.
Enrico Sereni is an artist with a clear academic background. He stands out for his classical conception of painting, which sees him as a protagonist in the production of subjects such as landscapes and still lifes.
