Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The composition is constructed with great balance. The subject is set in a series of directional brushstrokes, both vertical and diagonal, which thoughtfully frame the representation. Within this framework, the scene unfolds, revealed by a light, soft touch in a minimal, pale color palette. In this way, the subject gradually reveals itself, almost emerging from the surface of the painting, and presenting itself to the viewer's gaze as a soft vision. All this makes the depiction extremely poetic and expressive, as if what we have before us is not reality, but reality transfigured in memory.
Enrico Felisari, a native of Castelleone (1897-1981), a self-taught artist, devoted himself primarily to landscapes and genre scenes. His technique is essentially figurative but is influenced by a post-impressionist language that fills his subjects with luminous and atmospheric vibrations, so much so that they completely merge with the space in which they interact.
