Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

This work is an example of the many bas-reliefs that Emilio Greco dedicated to the study and research of the female form. The artist's exploration focuses on volume and movement. This series of works demonstrates how fundamental Greco's classical training was to his career. The artist pursues an ideal of pure, harmonious beauty through the creation of a balanced, almost geometric volume within the composition, yet one that comes to life thanks to a soft modeling that softens the forms. The pursuit of naturalistic rendering is brought to extraordinary levels of execution, thanks to Maestro Greco's technique, which allows him to reproduce every detail with grace and elegance. The physiognomies and expressions of these female figures clearly demonstrate Greco's pursuit of a broad, classical aesthetic, with a sacred aura and mythical origins.
Emilio Greco was a Catanian artist born in Catania in 1913 and died in Rome in 1995. Primarily engaged in sculpture, he was also a writer and illustrator. His work focused primarily on the female nude. His Bathers series and female portraits are famous. He taught for a time at the Carrara Academy and achieved fame with the monument to Pinocchio and the Fairy, created in 1956 for the town of Collodi. He died in 1995.
