Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Holder's interpretation of landscape painting is based on several factors. First, the overall approach is traditional: the landscape is conceived as a broad vista according to correct perspective rules. The execution maintains a barely perceptible pictorialism, in the sense that the brushstrokes are cursive and rapid in the details (ensuring a certain immediacy of execution), yet overall the artist avoids excessive atmosphericism in the representation. Everything falls within the purview of a clear and crisp naturalism of the Romantic era, interpreted by the hand of an excellent painter.
Yorkshire landscape painter, born in Scarborough in 1847 and died in 1922. He exhibited from 1864 to 1893 in Suffolk Street, also at the Royal Academy (1872–73). His pictures are mostly coastal views of Yorkshire. He lived in London, painting pictures of Surrey and Sussex, then visited South Africa, where he produced many commissions. In 1917 he exhibited a view of Victoria Falls on the Zambezi at the Royal Academy. Many of his paintings are in the City Art Gallery, York.
