Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
This work is particularly interesting because it shows a Purificato completely different from his easel work. Indeed, instead of the balanced, figurative style of his popular paintings, the artist here employs a much more expressionistic language. Through a series of energetic, monochromatic brushstrokes, the object is essentially constructed in negative. The painter manages to convey the vase's volume and its shadows despite using highly synthetic brushstrokes.
Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic career began in Rome in 1936, coinciding with his time as editor of the magazine "Cinema." He participated in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style is a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
