Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is particularly interesting because it demonstrates Domenico Purificato's interpretation of the landscape, a rather rare subject in his artistic output. The artist's poetics remain consistent with that of his celebrated female images, in the sense of a concrete realism, yet with expressionistic overtones. In this work, the entire structure is determined by a highly complex graphic style that depicts the landscape with great freshness and immediacy of execution. This graphic style creates, within the composition, a system of lines that can follow a diagonal or sinuous path: these lines are useful for identifying the interactions of objects in space and their existential vibrations. This is a type of composition, therefore, designed to enhance the movement and life of nature with a lively technique.
Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic career began in Rome in 1936, coinciding with his time as editor of the magazine "Cinema." He participated in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style is a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
