Description of the work
Description of the work
He exhibited for the first time in 1936. In the early part of his artistic career he adhered to the so-called Roman movement, initiated by Scipione (artist) and Mario Mafai, shared with Raffaele Frumenti. A multifaceted artist, from 1940 to 1943 he was editor of the magazine Cinema , of which he was also editor-in-chief, replacing Vittorio Mussolini from 25 July until the periodical's closure at the end of 1943 due to war events.
In the postwar period, he was a leading figure in neorealism in Rome, immortalizing ordinary people, figures, and rural scenes of everyday life in his paintings. He collaborated with neorealist director and friend Giuseppe De Santis in 1956, overseeing the color scheme, set design, and costumes for the film Giorni d'amore . He took part in important exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. He also worked in fiction, nonfiction, theater, and television.
Among his theoretical essays on art: Nineteenth-Century Italian Painting (Sciascia, Caltanissetta-Rome 1959), The Colors of Rome (Adriatica, Bari 1965), Callimachus, Painting for Man (Trevi, Rome 1971), and the posthumous How to Read a Painting (Rusconi Immagini, Milan 1985). He was director of the Brera Academy in Milan until 1980. The master is also responsible for a mosaic in the lunette of the medieval cathedral in Fondi, his hometown.
He passed away in 1984 at the age of 69, following a stroke.
A school in Rome, in the Fonte Meravigliosa-Cecchignola area, and the Domenico Purificato Stadium in Fondi, home of Unicusano Fondi Calcio, are named after the artist.
