Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
This work is highly illustrative of Domenico Purificato's artistic language, as it can be considered a study of the female figure. Purificato always straddles the line between unfiltered realism and a kind of idealized symbolism. If the subject, as is common in Purificato's art, is a simple, popular figure, the painter, in portraying it, exerts anti-naturalistic forces that simplify the figure, making it more iconic and symbolic. In this work, Purificato uses a very light line, full of nuances that lend dynamism to the representation, and thus the entire figure is constructed with rapid hatching. The result is a delightful sketch that retains all its realistic authenticity and, at the same time, a decisive, fresh expressiveness. The entire subject, in short, is resolved in a pictorial vibration, a direct result of the painter's sensitivity.
Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic career began in Rome in 1936, coinciding with his time as editor of the magazine "Cinema." He participated in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style is a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
