Description of the work
Description of the work
The terracotta bas-relief depicts an elderly man seen in profile, with a long beard and slightly long hair. The deeply wrinkled face suggests the subject's advanced age, while the serious or thoughtful expression evokes a sense of introspection and wisdom. The work conveys an atmosphere of reflection and solemnity, leaving room for different interpretations of the sitter's life. The work reflects the detailed realism typical of Domenico Mastroianni, with particular attention to the expressiveness of the face and the textured rendering of the terracotta. The meticulous treatment of the wrinkles, beard, and hair gives the bas-relief a sense of depth and naturalism, emphasized by the skillful use of chiaroscuro. Mastroianni, influenced by classical tradition and Art Nouveau, was known for his ability to infuse vitality and movement into his creations, even in bas-reliefs. The treatment of the subject in a profile pose recalls traditional portraiture, but the soft modeling and emotional rendering bring the work closer to a more modern language. Domenico Mastroianni (1876-1962) was an Italian sculptor and medallist, known for his skill in working with terracotta and for inventing "scultografia," a technique that combined plasticine bas-reliefs with photography to produce artistic postcards. After a period in Paris, where he became interested in Art Nouveau and Impressionism, he returned to Italy, dedicating himself to sculpture in marble, bronze, and ceramic. Founder of the "Casa" factory in Acquapendente, he contributed to the spread of artistic ceramics. His works, often characterized by strong expressive realism, range from portraits to historical and literary scenes.
