Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

From an analysis of this work, we can understand Domenico Azzellini's conception of landscape painting. He maintains a connection with the description of sensory data, of what he sees and perceives through his senses, but everything is transfigured according to a rigorous compositional logic. Indeed, the artist reconstructs the sensory world not according to a naturalistic principle of imitation, but according to a geometric spirit. Thus, even the picturesque corner, with the trabocco in front of a suggestive sunset, is reduced to a precise system of vertical and horizontal lines. The space, as a whole, is organized into horizontal bands of color, but then those same lines reverberate to describe the movement of the sea waves. Even though in reality everything appears static, in a sort of magical metaphysical immobility. Consistently, even the representation of objects follows a generally hyperrealistic line that does not yield to any pictorial effect. From a chromatic perspective, the sense of unreality is confirmed by the choice of very intense, almost anti-naturalistic colors.
Domenico Azzellini is a painter originally from Carpino who lives and works in Ariano Irpino. He practices traditional genres such as landscape, portraiture, and still life, but his interpretations are always highly original. Indeed, Domenico Azzellini's pictorial language is based on a rigorous geometric reconstruction of the world that transfigures everything into a kind of magical realism. Azzellini is an artist gifted with an excellent technique, also distinguished by his use of an exuberant palette of colors.
