Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In the case of this sculpture by Davi Brogi, with the charged title "Futura," we can see how the artist begins with the sensory data of a portrait and then conceptually develops the subject according to an expressionistic sculptural approach bordering on informal art.
In this sculpture, artist David Brogi develops the theme of portraiture and the human figure in a subjective and expressionistic manner. First and foremost, the figure's symbolic significance is clear: its physiognomy is deliberately sketched with strongly angular features, giving it an iconic character. The messages the artist wishes to convey transcend the contingency of sensory data and are expressed in the sculpture's compositional concept. Indeed, the head rises from a molten, fluid material from which it appears to have been generated through a biomorphic process driven by a strong upward motion. The sculptural material thus appears alive thanks to the artist's gestures, who has successfully transferred his creative energy into the plaster.
David Brogi is an artist originally from Ponsacco, the city where he lives and works. A complex figure with many interests, he is not only interested in art but also in politics and theater. His training began in 1984, when he attended a private art school in Pisa. He later joined the Associazione Artisti Pisani, through which he exhibited his work in several group shows, the first at the age of 14, at the Continental Hotel in Tirrenia. At 15, his work "Futura" received a special mention at the Premio Italia in Certaldo.
