Description of the work
Description of the work
The works are still kept in their original packaging, below is a brief description of them;
The Italian Unification:
Designed and edited by Giovanni Sabbatucci and Vittorio Vidotto , with the contribution of thirty-two scholars from diverse backgrounds and expertise, it helps the reader understand how unification was concretely achieved, not only in institutions and political culture, not only in literature and the arts, but also, despite countless difficulties, in the real life of Italian society. It analyzes how a numerically limited but determined and comprehensively prepared ruling class managed to equip itself, and the country, with the essential tools that alone could enable the construction of a state capable of survival and growth. It therefore discusses statistics and cartography, schools, universities, and scientific institutions, customs and currency, banks and public finance, transportation and communications, museums and libraries, the press and publishing. It discusses the Church and religion, notables and employees, the South and social conflicts, the growth and transformation of cities, and a slow and contested path to women's emancipation. And literature and the visual arts, music and theater are also discussed. Naturally, the more specifically institutional dimension (the monarchy, the government, Parliament, the central administration, legislative unification, diplomacy, the judiciary, the armed forces) and that of political debate and associations are also addressed. The overarching theme, however, is a single one: the constitution of the unified state, considered in its diverse and complex aspects and revisited through the figures of its protagonists. Not only statesmen and politicians, military personnel, conspirators and combatants in the wars of the Risorgimento, but also technicians, scientists, artists, professors and magistrates, entrepreneurs, bankers, and public officials. Over three hundred and fifty short biographies aim not so much to compose a gallery of patriotic medallions as to reconstruct the collective portrait of a ruling class.
Christians of Italy:
Christians of Italy is a monumental work that stands out from the crowd of occasional or celebratory studies. The fruit of extensive preparation, it comprises two weighty volumes in which over one hundred scholars of various orientations have undertaken to analyze the presence of Christians in Italy from unification to the present day, in a rich array of forms and declinations. Published by the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia, these two volumes, totaling 1,743 pages, present themselves as a collaborative undertaking of significant scholarly interest, worthy of attention and discussion because they have the power to make a lasting impact on historical studies and, like a vast map, to guide readers interested in the current transformations of the sacred, and Christianity in particular, in today's and tomorrow's society.
