Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
Sicilian painter Corrado Papa's style stems from his own personal reworking of a post-impressionist technique. His work is based on long, colorful brushstrokes, which construct the subjects, exposing them to a process of synthesis that could almost be described as expressionist. Except that the brushstrokes remain rapid, cursive, and ready to capture every vibration of light. The painter's aim is, in fact, not only to restore immediacy to the depicted scene, but also to express the subject's movement and frenzy. This frenzy also reflects the emotional state of the person experiencing the depicted situation.
Corrado Papa is a painter born in Noto in 1938 and has been active on the art scene for many years. Throughout his career, he has experimented with various mediums, from poetry to theater, including in dialect. His favorite form of expression, however, remains painting, which he has practiced in various forms and techniques. He has exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions, and many critics have written about him. In 2003, Vittorio Sgarbi presented the catalog of a retrospective of his work.
