Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.

In the graphic works of painter Corrado Balest, line is the protagonist. An elegantly graphic line that, with just a few strokes, manages to shape and expressively characterize the subjects. In some cases, the line also lends itself to fine hatching to create areas of shadow and light. In others, it maintains its purity, perhaps breaking repeatedly to add complexity and dynamism to the composition.

Corrado Balest (1923 - 2016) was a painter originally from Sospirolo in the province of Belluno. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice under the guidance of Maestro Cadorin and exhibited for the first time at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation. He subsequently participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Veneto region, as well as in Vienna, Rome, and Milan. In addition to painting, Balest also worked as a graphic artist, especially using etching, creating various illustrations for literary texts.
